Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and learning
  • Research
  • Community engagement and academic scholarship

Minimum requirements:

  • PhD in Microbiology or a closely related field
  • Associate Professor: NRF rating
  • Associate Professor: Six years teaching and learning and research experience at a tertiary or related institution in environmental microbiology, soil microbiology or microbial ecology
  • Senior Lecturer: Three years teaching and learning and research experience at a tertiary or related institution in environmental microbiology, soil microbiology or microbial ecology

Other competency requirements:

  • Experience in programme development, including development of new teaching modules and writing of course material
  • Extensive research experience and willingness to support current research in the subject group
  • Record of high quality research outputs, including scholarly publications and conference contributions
  • Record of supervision of postgraduate students or development of junior staff
  • Associate professor: Track record of administration, management or leadership roles; proven success at attracting research funding and existing research collaboration at national or international level
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with the position
  • Undertake and promote community involvement where appropriate
  • Develop or maintain a nationally and internationally recognised research profile through multidisciplinary and collaborative research
  • Obtain external funding for research that will advance the strategic goals of the subject group and research entity
  • Demonstrate language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
