The South African Society for Microbiology wishes to congratulate two of its members who were honoured with the Department of Science and Technology's (DST) Women in Science Awards in Johannesburg on Thursday (13 August 2015). The awards are organised and presented by the 
Professor Marla Trindade, SARChI Research Chair in Microbial Genomics and Director of the Institute of Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics received the 2015 Distinguished Young Woman Scientist (Life Sciences) Award for her research in microbial ecology of various environments. This is the second year in a row that a University of Western Cape scientist has been nominated as a DST Distinguished Woman Scientist in her field of research endeavour.
Dr Wesaal Khan of the Department of Microbiology in the Faculty of Science, Stellenbosch University, finished second in the category: Distinguished Young Women Researchers. Dr Wesaal Khan has received national and international acclaim for her outstanding research outputs on water. Through her work, she continuously tries to find Millennium Development Goals solutions for South Africa and the Southern African Development Community.
