At SASM2013 we are offering all delegates the exciting opportunity to participate in two workshops which will be held in parallel on Tuesday, 26 November, from 15:15-17:15. If you are interested in participating, please contact the organizers of the workshops directly by email.

Details of the workshops:

MicroEdu Workshop (2 hour session)
Facilitator: H. Y. Chenia

10 min: H.Y. Chenia:  Active Learning and Teaching: Who, Why, How?
Background and rationale for active learning.
10 min: Participants: Think-pair-share
1 hour: Participants: Examples of Active learning techniques
30 min: Participants: Discussion: The Process of Active Learning and Teaching
10 min: Summary
5 min: Exit assessment

Participants should identify before-hand a concept that they find challenging to teach in class.
I will make some papers and case-studies available online a week before the workshop. Markers and Flip charts as well as tables for mini-breakouts will be used. Other workshop materials will be provided on site.  Participants should bring writing material with them.

How to be your own best mentor (2 hour session)
Facilitator: Dr Carolee T. Bull

15 minutes: C. T. Bull, self mentoring. Speaker will discuss how to define and then teach yourself the knowledge, skills and abilities you need to be successful in your career.
Break out into groups: Graduate student, Early career professional, Mature Professionals.  It would be good to have one good mentor (mature scientist with the other two groups for help)

1 hour

Introduction to session by CTBull (what do I want you to do).
Part 1: Define the skills on which you are evaluated. Carolee will bring lists from the US, but these may be different in SA.
Part 2: Make an honest self –evaluation. Discernment, how do you descern where your skills and abilities are?
Part 3: Define ways to get the skills or demonstrate the skills that you have defined as weak

30 minute report back

We could also provide one-to-one discussions after the general session.
Each person should bring something with which to record their personal observations.
