Technical Officer Position

The Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) is a leading research unit based within the Department of Biotechnology. IMBM is committed to being a globally competitive institute through excellence in research and in the training of future research leaders. The IMBM has recently been selected as one of the core biobanks of the Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa (BBSA), an initiative of the Department of Science & Innovation’s (DSI) South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR). The biobank will be registered with the Global Genome Biodiversity Network.

Key Performance Areas *
The IMBM seeks to appoint a highly motivated, flexible, and innovative Technical Officer for the technical and data management activities associated with the IMBM biobank and BBSA standards.

The key responsibilities will include:

  • Verification of the quality and the identity of the entries by culturing and molecular diagnostics;
  • Identification of additional entries and generation of data to grow the size and the value of collection;
  • Implementation of a labelling system for data capture and access purposes;
  • Collection, recording, storage and management of all data related to the entries and the migration of the database to the selected collection database management platform;
  • Providing access to selected entries and data in the Biobank;
  • Using validated methods for the processing and analysis of entries to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency;
  • Using validated equipment, instruments and materials for storage and distribution.

Minimum Requirements *

  • A BSc degree in Microbiology/Biotechnology or a related field;
  • A minimum of three years postgraduate experience in microbial culturing and molecular diagnostic-related skills;
  • Excellent record-keeping and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a good command of the English language;
  • Proficiency in all aspects of MS Office software.

Experience in the following will be an advantage:

  • Postgraduate experience in microbial collections.
