Scope of Research:
To develop a metagenomic sequencing and analysis pipeline for environmental samples, and to evaluate the use of metagenomic sequencing of environmental and neonatal colonisation samples to predict the epidemiology and resistance of bacterial pathogens in the Tygerberg Hospital neonatal unit.
The fellowship is available for a minimum period of one year, with the possibility of renewal, dependent on satisfactory progress and funding availability. The value of the fellowship will be R220 000 per annum, which is not subject to taxation (providing the candidate adheres to certain conditions).
The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to:
− Develop the project protocol and apply for ethical, hospital and NHLS approval for the study
− Apply for additional project funding
− Engage with the clinical staff on the neonatal platform at Tygerberg Hospital
− Plan and perform experiments within the laboratory and develop analysis pipelines
− Analyse and interpret clinical and sequencing data
− Contribute significantly to the publication of research outputs
− Contribute to the general management and function of the laboratory
− Co-supervise an MSc student involved in the study
Requirements:
− PhD in Medical Microbiology or related field, obtained within the past 5 years
− Ability to work independently and with full ownership of research and development projects
− Comprehensive knowledge of bacterial pathogens and antibiotic resistance mechanisms
− Experience with next generation sequencing (preferably Oxford Nanopore sequencing)
− Experience in bioinformatics and biostatistics
− Strong written and oral communication skills in English
− Excellent social and team working skills
− Open minded and a fast learner
