The Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow for a high-impact funded by the NRF SARChI Research Chair in Microbial Genomics and the EU H2020 BlueRemediomics program.

RESEARCH PROJECT: OMICS-Guided Discovery of Novel Antimicrobial Peptides from Marine Invertebrate Symbionts

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and conduct innovative research on peptide discovery employing complimentary bioactivity- and genome-guided approaches
  • Author/co-author yearly high-quality publication outputs in international journals or book chapters
  • Co-supervise postgraduate students
  • Initiate projects and apply for competitive funding
  • Preset research at national and international conferences
  • Contribute to academic and intellectual leadership within the IMBM

ELIGIBILITY:

  • A PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry or a related discipline, that was awarded within the past 5 years
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques. Experience in genetic engineering, enzymology, microbial genomics, and HPLC / LC/GC-MS will be added advantages
  • South African citizenship or permanent residence
  • Not have held NRF postdoctoral funding previously

THE OFFER

  • Value: R320 000 per annum, (tax free)
  • Support: R50 000 in additional research expenses
  • Duration: 1 year, renewable up to 3 years based on performance and funding availability
  • Start Date: Immediately, but not later than 1 April 2026
  • Closing Date: 6 February 2026
